Song a Week 2021: Week 52 I am intrigued by the space between history and myth. This piece consists of four songs (and a reprise) that explore the Great North Road in the UK. The road has meandered its way north between London and Edinburgh since before Roman times. Like a river it has taken different routes and has more recently been tamed by modern road building.

Song a Week 2021: Week 50 Happy Christmas!

‘The Fairy on Top of the Tree’ is here. On the one hand this is a pantomime song and meant to be comedic. It was written about a grumpy, Christmas fairy who suffers with vertigo. However, the humour is deliberately dark and the lyrics comment on people fulfilling roles that they are not comfortable with and those at the top of the tree who know they might fall. ………. Song a Week 2021: Week 47 This song is a hybrid created by weaving together different stimuli. I started with the chord sequence which leads with Am on the verse and F# on the chorus. Hence, the intended pun in the title. Having set up the title I then added a dollop of Jane Austen and a memory of the joy of reading books in bed, late Sunday morning, when I was a boy.
