Juniper Days

Song a Week 2021: Week 38 – September 26th. I started with a Kinks ‘lazy Sunday afternoon feel’ but as usual got diverted to the darker side of human nature and the song ended up contrasting the pleasure of drinking with addiction to alcohol.

The Garden & The Gardener

Song a Week 2021: Week 37 – September 19th 2021. Short and sweet this one. It is our garden and Alison is the gardener, so this song is for her. Me, I’m just a lawn mower, you can tell me by the way I walk.

Better Up

A song about being uplifted and engaged with others. Chilled resilience.

The Shape of Your Shadow

From the personal to the international level, some human beings think it their right to dominate and subjugate others. This is a song about individual rights and a plea for tolerance and accommodation of those who do not agree with you.

Brouhaha

Song a Week 2021 Week 33 and its a brouhaha
ˈbruːhɑːhɑ’ːnoun

An instrumental piece, with different instruments competing for your attention. I started with the baseline……

Uncertainty

Businessman dealing in certainty meets woman who creates uncertainty and plunges his life into chaos. For better or worse who can tell?

Laugh Out Loud

A bleak take on the ‘tears of a clown’, in this case continued laughter when the fun has stopped. This was written out of the drum loop and so is unusual as most of my songs start as chords on the piano.

Elmet

This song was written in direct response the Song a Week challenge them ‘Given Name’. It references icons from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s who had adopted stage names. Here they introduce themselves as part of an aged supergroup. Yes, “I am the Music Man’!

Empty Space

A song about bereavement and the senseless loss of life that results from knife crime. Written, recorded and published in just one day.
